Smith Shenanigans

10/19/19

We visited the Pumpkin Patch last Sunday, 10/13/19. The kids had a blast. My cousin came along with her camera and got some great shots. The kids picked out “just-right” pumpkins and had a blast decorating them the next day. They wanted to get right to work on them as soon as we got home, but it was after 9:00 p.m., and they had school the next day. #aintnobodygottimeforthat

Nearly a month later, Max had to have the same surgery as Demi. Just a few weeks ago he had an episode where his belly button was stuck out and hard like a rock. I could not push it in at all. I’d always been told by the doctor that if it could be pushed in, it’s fine. This wasn’t the case this time. I scheduled an appointment, and little did I know, we’d be walking out with a date for surgery.

The medical term for what Max had experienced is incarceration. It’s basically a confinement of a body part. He’d lost blood supply in that area momentarily. During that time, I consoled him until it went down, and I was able to push it in. Luckily, it went back in. That isn’t the case for most people, which causes them to have to have a whole ‘nother different type of invasive surgery. He had the normal procedure to repair his hernia on 10/4, and he’s already back in business being a terrible two-nager.

Demi had surgery on 9/5/19 to remove her umbilical hernia that she’s had since birth. She was a soldier, but let me tell ya’ll she’s been milking it for everything it’s worth. I may as well get her a service bell to ring when she requests something cold to drink, a popsicle, or for someone to fluff her pillow.

Originally, the doctor didn’t want to repair the hernia until she turned six, but Demi started complaining about discomfort, so we went ahead and scheduled it. She had an amazing group of doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital. Shout out to Dr. Vasudevan (pediatric surgeon) and Dr. Chen (anesthesiologist)! We can’t wait to see how her new belly button looks once the dressing comes off in a few days.
